Child of Fire

It was silent in the room. In the bed slept Raye and by the side in the cot was her newborn baby. Jadeite crept into the room silently and placed a kiss on his wife’s forehead. She stirred and slowly opened her eyes. As the person who had woken her up came into view she smiled.

 

“Jadeite! You’re back so soon.”

 

“You’ve been asleep for a while now Raye. I just went out to tell everyone the good news. They’re all very pleased and send their best wishes.”

 

Raye propped herself up, “I guess it was just so exhausting I needed to rest. It took a while and a lot of pain but it was definitely worth it. Wouldn’t you agree?”

 

“Oh I agree strongly. How is she anyway?” Upon seeing his daughter fast asleep Jadeite smiled fondly, “She looks just like you Raye. She’ll be as beautiful as you and I’ll have to watch out for any boys who come within a ten-mile radius!’”

 

Raye laughed and pushed back some of the hair which had fallen into her eyes, “Aaliyah…, still want to keep that name?”

 

“Sure. I think she fits it. Oh she’s waking up shall we ask her? Hey there sweetheart, do you like the name Aaliyah?” The baby gurgled. “I’ll take that as a yes then.”

 

“You were wrong Jadeite,” said Raye. He looked very confused and in answer to his bewilderment she explained, “She doesn’t look just like me. She has your eyes.”

 

Jadeite chuckled and observed his daughter’s big, blue eyes. He went closer to Raye and planted a gentle kiss on her lips. “I love you.”

 

“I know and I love you too.”

‘…and blood type A. Well I believe that’s all, Aaliyah and you can go home Rei.”

 

“Thanks Ami!”

 

“By the way, I love her name, it’s so unusual. How did you come up with it?”

 

“Well I consulted the great fire for a name to give my child. Obviously as Jadeite and I didn’t want to know the sex of the baby, just a vague idea would do. It told me to pick something starting with the first letter of the Roman alphabet. We then went from there and came up with Aaliyah, which is a variant of Aliyah, my mother’s name.”

 

“If only I found it that easy!”

 

“Don’t worry Ami you still have plenty of time. You don’t always have to be so far ahead and well prepared. It will come to you.”

 

“I hope so. Thanks Rei. You better get going; Jadeite’s bursting to see you. Remember to gets lots of vitamin A in your diet, as you probably won’t get much sleep and your eyes need to be looked after.”

 

“No problem. I won’t forget. Thanks Ami!”

“That’s right sweetie, A B C, the first three letters of the alphabet. Fun to play with aren’t they?” Rei asked her baby daughter. In reply she cooed at her mother. They were getting Aaliyah settled on her first night at home. She was at present distracted by the mobile hanging above her cot. “We should thank Amy and Zoicite for their gift. It seems Aaliyah likes it.”

 

“They probably thought that as A B C can be used for the whole alphabet, it’s some kind of primer for teaching it and the first elements of reading,” said Jadeite jokingly. They both laughed and then stopped to look at their daughter. She had fallen fast asleep after her exertions with her toy. They were in awe of the little miracle they now had. After admiring her wordlessly for many minutes they decided to get ready for bed themselves.

 

Soon enough they were cuddling in their king-sized bed. They were starting a new stage of their lives together, but there was no sense of apprehension. With the love of each other they knew there was nothing to fear. Jadeite brushed some of Rei’s hair behind her shoulders.

 

“The apartment is going to be a bit small now we’ve got a new addition to the family. I think it’s time we moved into my house. What do you think?” He asked her.

 

“I think you read my mind,” she replied and they laughed. “We’ll still be close to our family and friends. It’ll be somewhat different from what we’ve become used to though, what with us all living in the same building.”

 

“Well we were all going to move out sooner or later, it just happens we’re going sooner. I don’t mind, so long as I’m with you and our family.”

 

She brushed a lock of golden hair out of his eyes. “The same goes for me.” Then she kissed him. They were interrupted some moments later by a now wide awake Aaliyah. Rei laughed, “So begin the sleepless nights.” They both got up to tend to their daughter. Together they could face anything.
